Installing Telegram on macOS in four short steps

The Mac App Store version is the default recommendation because it keeps itself updated. Users on older macOS releases can still fall back to the .dmg build hosted on macos.telegram.org.

  1. 1

    Open the macOS page

Click the Mac App Store button above. macOS asks for your Apple ID password before it downloads the .dmg or .pkg bundle.

  2. 2

    Drag Telegram into Applications

For the notarised .dmg build, drop Telegram.app into /Applications. macOS Gatekeeper verifies the developer signature automatically.

  3. 3

    Grant notifications

On first launch, allow notifications, contacts and (optionally) camera access. Skip contacts if you sync via QR code from iPhone.

  4. 4

    Enable menu-bar quick reply

Preferences → General → Show menu bar icon. Cmd + Ctrl + T then opens a slim compose window that stays on top of the current app.

Keyboard shortcuts every Mac user should learn

Telegram for Mac ships a familiar Command-key set. Memorise these five and you rarely need to touch the trackpad again.

  • ⌘ + K

Global search across every chat, group and channel.

  • ⌘ + N

Start a new conversation with contact suggestions.

  • ⌘ + /

Quick access to shortcuts and app-wide settings.

  • ⌘ + Shift + M

    Toggle the compact menu-bar composer.

  • ⌘ + [ / ]

Move between conversations without touching the trackpad.

How Telegram keeps itself updated on macOS

  • Mac App Store copies update in the background whenever macOS pulls other store updates.
  • The .dmg build ships an in-app updater that downloads a delta patch — no need to reinstall.
  • Prefer TestFlight-style previews? Telegram publishes macOS betas through their public preview channel; join from the official website.

Common Mac-specific questions

Does Telegram run natively on M1, M2 and M3 Macs?

Yes. The universal binary contains both x86_64 and arm64 slices. On Apple Silicon Macs, macOS picks the ARM version automatically.

Do I need iCloud for Telegram on macOS?

No. Telegram uses its own cloud for chats. iCloud only comes into play for Handoff and Continuity, and both features are optional.

Can I move an existing Telegram account to macOS without losing chats?

Absolutely. Sign in with your phone number or scan the QR code from the mobile app — every cloud chat, group and channel appears within seconds.
