Chapter 1

Install the client for your main device

Pick the installer that matches how you spend most of your day. Windows and macOS get the full feature set on a laptop, while the Web app is perfect for a shared computer.

  1. Open the download hub and pick the platform that matches your daily driver.
  2. Run the installer — Telegram Desktop finishes in under a minute on any modern SSD.
  3. Optionally install the mobile client on your phone; it is required for the QR-code login step.

Chapter 2

Sign in with QR code or phone

First-time users log in with a phone number and an SMS/login code. If you already use Telegram on your phone, the QR-code flow is faster and does not require a code.

  1. On your phone: Settings → Devices → Link Desktop Device → Scan QR.
  2. Give the new session a name so you can revoke it later — e.g. “Laptop Chrome”.
  3. Cloud chats appear within seconds. Secret chats stay on their original device.

Chapter 3

Tune notifications for signal-to-noise

Telegram supports per-chat and per-account notification rules. Tune them once and you rarely have to mute a chat by hand again.

  1. Settings → Notifications and Sounds. Turn off Preview if you use Telegram on a shared screen.
  2. Add a nightly schedule so notifications go silent between 10 pm and 7 am.
  3. In every chat, tap the header → Notifications and pick a custom sound or vibration.

Chapter 4

Build a folder set that mirrors your life

Chat folders slice a busy Telegram into calm tabs. Start with three folders — Personal, Work, Communities — and evolve from there.

  1. Settings → Folders → Create New Folder.
  2. Include groups by keyword or username, and exclude muted or archived chats.
  3. Reorder folders so the most active one lives on the left of the tab bar.

Chapter 5

Turn on the safety switches

Five minutes of setup gives you a Telegram account that survives SIM swaps, credential leaks and lost devices.

  1. Settings → Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification. Add a cloud password.
  2. Enable Passcode Lock and pair it with Face ID / Touch ID / Windows Hello.
  3. Review Settings → Devices, terminate old browser sessions and set a session timeout.

Chapter 6

Explore channels, bots and stickers

With the basics covered, spend a few minutes discovering the parts of Telegram that go beyond a WhatsApp swap — public channels, bots and animated sticker packs.

  1. Tap Search and type a topic — e.g. “Bing SEO news” — to discover public channels.
  2. Try a Web Mini App bot like a translator or a Kanban board directly in a chat.
  3. Install a couple of animated sticker packs and pin your favourite for quick reactions.

Once the setup is done, spend one focused minute on each of the following. They turn the client from a WhatsApp replacement into a real productivity tool.

Import your contact list

Import contacts from your phone if you want quick lookups. Skip it and use @usernames if you prefer to stay anonymous.

Set a profile photo

Upload a static image or, with Telegram Premium, a short animated loop. Restrict who can see it under Privacy → Profile Photo.
