Four-step Telegram Desktop install for Windows 10 and Windows 11

These steps assume a stock English installation of Windows 10 or 11. The whole process takes well under two minutes on any modern SSD.

    Run the tsetup .exe file

    Double-click the downloaded installer and let Windows verify its digital signature. If SmartScreen is on, choose “More info → Run anyway” for the signed Telegram installer.

    Pick the install location

    The default path is Program Files (x86). Change it only if you keep portable apps on a secondary drive. Enable the Start-menu shortcut for quick access.

    Sign in with QR or phone

    Open Telegram on your phone → Settings → Devices → Scan QR. Your cloud chats, media and channels appear within a couple of seconds.

    Enable two-step verification

    Settings → Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification. Add a password and recovery email so a SIM swap can never lock you out of Telegram.

Keeping Telegram Desktop current on Windows

  • By default the client checks for a new build every launch and applies patches in the background — you never need to re-run the installer.
  • If you use a corporate proxy, enable Settings → Advanced → Connection type → Use custom proxy. HTTPS and SOCKS5 are supported out of the box.
  • Prefer a portable build? Use the same signed .exe, tick “Install for me only” and copy the resulting folder to a USB stick.

Removing Telegram Desktop cleanly

  1. Step 1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, search for Telegram Desktop and click Uninstall.
  2. Step 2. Remove the local cache folder at %APPDATA%\Telegram Desktop if you want to wipe secret chats and downloaded media.
  3. Step 3. Cloud chats stay in the cloud. Re-installing and signing back in restores them within seconds.

Is the Telegram Desktop installer safe to run on Windows 11?
